Malang Photo Hunt
01 · The idea
The idea
Let's make it this way: we hunt for photos. Different kinds of photos at each place, and different challenges for each of us — because we all have different cameras.
If we just walk around, we all end up taking the same photos of the same walls. Tasks fix that: each of us looks for something specific, so we come home with different shots.
We shoot on our own, but we walk together. We do not show each other photos during the day. We see everything at dinner.
- I · COLOUR
Jodipan, 14:15–15:30. Playful, chaotic, graphic.
- II · TIME
Kajoetangan and Kayutangan street, 15:50–17:45. Nostalgic, cinematic, human.
- III · FORM
Alun-Alun Tugu, 17:45–18:30. Symmetric, graphic, blue hour.
Each act becomes one Instagram slideshow. We pick the photos at dinner.
02 · The schedule
The schedule
The briefing and gear check are online. We start at the bridge at 14:00. Sunset is at 17:30. We tuned the afternoon to it: golden hour lands on the heritage street, and the final challenge lands on the afterglow.
03 · Act I · Jodipan · 14:15–15:30 · slideshow 1/3
COLOUR
Playful · chaotic · graphic
Jodipan has painted houses, murals, stairs, alleys and the river. The task: make colour the subject of the photo, not the background. Do not take the usual photo of a colourful wall.
Before the day, skim the colour guide: how colour works in a frame — five tips, ten minutes.
-
Three Colours
One photo with at least three strong colours. The colours must carry the photo, not just be in it.
-
Human + Colour
A person in a colourful place: someone walking past a painted wall, someone in a bright shirt, a child framed by painted houses.
-
Unexpected Colour
Something colourful that is not a painted wall or house. This stops us from all taking the same postcard photo.
-
Pattern
Repeating shapes: windows, roofs, stairs, buckets, textures. The goal is a graphic photo, almost abstract.
-
Colour Palette
Bonus. One photo that looks like a colour palette. As if someone designed the colours on purpose.
04 · Act II · Kajoetangan and Kayutangan · 15:45–17:40 · slideshow 2/3
TIME
Nostalgic · cinematic · textured · human
Kajoetangan is old Malang: heritage houses, narrow alleys, old signs, doors, textures. Motorcycles and smartphones move through it. The task: make the photo feel like old Malang, not just show an old building. At 17:00 we move to the main street for golden hour.
Street reference: Eric Kim's street photography 101 — the mindset before the technique.
-
Then × Now
Old Malang and something modern in the same photo: heritage wall plus motorcycle, old shop plus smartphone.
-
Human Scale
Use a person to show the size or character of the architecture. The person does not need to be the subject.
-
Texture
A close-up that shows the surface: peeling paint, rust, doors, signs, old furniture, pavement. Get close.
-
Ghost of Malang
Make an ordinary scene feel like a frame from an old film. Use silhouettes, backlight, shadows, muted colours or motion blur. Mood matters more than documentation.
05 · Act III · Alun-Alun Tugu · 17:45–18:30 · slideshow 3/3
FORM
Symmetric · graphic · blue hour
Tugu is an open square: the monument, symmetry, lines, traffic, people. We arrive at dusk, just after the 17:30 sunset. The monument lights come on later, around 18:00–19:00. This is the final challenge: 15 minutes, five photos (§10).
Before the day: symmetry and central composition — Act III is built on it.
Field tip — stand exactly on the centre line. Symmetry dies two steps to either side: find the axis first, then the frame. The monument lights come on later — about 18:00–19:00, best after 19:00. The finals are 17:45–18:00: all afterglow. The lit monument is a post-dinner ride back. Blue hour, for reference: Canon's blue-hour tips.06 · Anywhere, anytime
The universal challenges
These work at any of the three places. The weird-angle one is required: each of us does it at least once.
The composition reference: the rule of thirds — the one rule every task here bends on purpose.
-
Frame Within a Frame
Use a door, window, arch, plant, fence, alley or vehicle to frame the subject.
-
Reflection
Glass, water, mirrors, cars, shop windows, puddles. The city is in them twice.
-
Layering
One photo with clear depth: foreground, subject, background.
-
The Weird Angle
At least one photo from a position that feels wrong: very low, through something, behind a plant, looking straight up. Try it. The photo is often better from there.
-
Wildcard
One photo. No rules. Anything.
07 · The gear
Our cameras and roles
Three different cameras. None is better than the others. They just see differently. The role is a suggestion, not a job.
The Purist · that is me
Fujifilm X-T20
7Artisans 25mm f/1.8, manual focus · about 37.5mm on full frame
Strengths Fuji colours. f/1.8 separates the subject from the background. Small and quiet on the street.
My job One lens, manual focus, all day. The constraint is the point: I compose by moving, I focus by choosing. I pre-focus and wait for the moment to come into the frame.
Zone focusing The 25mm at f/8 has a deep focus zone: set the distance once, shoot without refocusing. How zone focusing works.
Not for Wide panoramas or faraway details. Those are your shots today.
The Explorer · that is you
Sony a6100
16–50mm kit zoom · autofocus
Strengths The most flexible camera of the day. Zoom range and autofocus for scenes that change fast.
Your job Change the focal length on purpose. Wide for the scene, long for details. Do not leave the lens in one position all day. That is the whole challenge.
Not for Strong subject isolation or a special look.
The Observer · that is you
Sony a6300
35mm f/1.8 · about 52.5mm on full frame
Strengths A normal lens with serious depth of field. People, moments, details. The background blur separates the subject.
Your job Shoot wide open. Isolate your subject. Stay patient. Candid and close.
Not for Huge architectural scenes. Step back and let the light do the work.
The Wildcard · optional
Xiaomi 14T
If the fourth friend comes. Phone, computational HDR, several lenses.
Strengths Not a worse camera. A different one. Always in a pocket, instant, and good in difficult light.
Your job Shoot what the big cameras miss while they change settings: hard light, odd angles, quick moments.
08 · 14:00 · The comparison
Same scene, three cameras
From the railing of Jembatan Embong Brantas (on Jl. Gatot Subroto), at 14:00: the classic view over the painted village. Same spot, same moment, three cameras (four if the Wildcard comes). One scene, three versions.
This is not a contest about which camera is better. It just shows how each camera changes the same frame. We compare them side by side at dinner.
09 · The rules
The rules
-
No showing photos during the hunt.
Not even "just one". If someone shows a great photo, we all start copying the composition without thinking.
-
Know the tasks, not each other's photos.
The tasks are shared. The interpretations stay private until dinner.
-
Stay together.
Between photos, stay with the group — on foot or on the bikes. The schedule only works if nobody wanders off.
-
The final five are sacred.
No deleting, no retakes, no showing. See §10.
10 · Final challenge · 17:45–18:00 · Alun-Alun Tugu
Five photos, fifteen minutes
Stop wandering. Find your spot on the square. Fifteen minutes, exactly five photos:
- Wide
- Portrait
- Human + Architecture
- Silhouette
- Wildcard
The rules: exactly five photos. No deleting. No retakes. Do not show anyone until dinner. Then we put them side by side, one category at a time.
Silhouette reference: the complete silhouette guide — expose for the sky, the rest is shape.
Why exactly five? Five deliberate photos are better than fifty hesitant ones. The limit forces decisions. Field tip — expose for the sky, not the monument. Meter the afterglow and underexpose about a stop: the silhouette goes black while the sky keeps its colour. Riders crossing the roundabout at dusk are ready-made silhouettes — or frame your own parked Vario against the sky. Sunset is at 17:30. The whole finale sits in the afterglow. The monument lights come on later, around 18:00–19:00 — ride back after dinner for those. Cloudy? The finale moves to about 16:50–17:05. See §13.11 · Dinner and the reveal
The reveal
We reveal everything at dinner on Kayutangan street. The order:
-
Act by act, everyone shows the best photos.
One photo per task if you got it. Show and pass. No commentary during the show.
-
The finals, side by side.
One category at a time: Wide vs Wide vs Wide. No scores, no winner. Three different eyes on the same task.
-
The same-scene trio from the bridge.
This is where we talk about the cameras, and about which version we like best.
-
Build the slideshows.
Three Instagram posts, one per act. Pick the photos at the table while it is fresh. 7–9 photos per act, strongest first. The posting plan is in §12.
12 · After the hunt · Instagram
Posting the photos
Three carousels, one per act. Here is the plan for them.
- Format.
7–9 photos per act, strongest first. All slides 4:5, 1080×1350, cropped before uploading. The first slide fixes the crop for the whole carousel. Instagram crops the rest, and you cannot fix it later.
- Covers.
One photo, no text. Make the three covers echo each other: a pink/red Jodipan frame, a golden heritage frame, a blue-hour Tugu frame. Same colour grade across all three posts.
- Order inside each carousel.
Strongest first. Then wide shots, then details, then a strong closer. Act III already has a built-in order: afterglow first, monument lights last.
- Music.
Add music to every carousel. Carousels with audio are eligible for the Reels tab, so they get more reach with zero extra work. Pick the track before publishing.
- Optional reel experiment.
Convert one act with "Create Reel from this post" (in the ⋯ menu). Post it 1–2 days after its carousel twin, different cover, under 90 seconds. Compare reach after a week.
- Captions.
Hook line first. Then a short story with the searchable words: Malang, Jodipan, Kayutangan, photo walk. End with one question. Max 5 hashtags, in the caption. Location tag on each post. Alt text on every slide.
- Posting.
One post per day, in order: COLOUR, TIME, FORM. Do not post all three at once. Start within two days of the hunt. Ignore "best time to post" advice — the studies contradict each other.
The same-scene set gets its own post: one slide per camera, labelled A/B/C (D if the Wildcard comes), names revealed at the end. Caption asks "which is which?" Keep it a carousel — zooming to compare is the point.
On the day: keep key content off the left and right edges of the frame. The 4:5 crop cuts the sides of a 3:2 sensor. Instagram re-serves carousels you scrolled past — with a different slide. Only carousels get a second chance. (Socialinsider's benchmarks) Hashtags are capped at 5 now (Dec 2025). Mosseri himself called "more hashtags = more reach" a myth. Reels over 3 minutes do not get recommended to new audiences. That is from Instagram's own help page. The receipts — where the numbers came from

13 · Plan B
If the weather is bad
Cloudy, no golden hour. The plan mostly stays the same, but the light goes early:
- Jodipan: no change.
Painted colours do not need sun. Flat light means no harsh shadows. The colour task gets easier.
- The street slot: skipped.
There is no golden hour to wait for. Fold it into Kajoetangan, then go to Tugu early.
- Tugu finale: moves to about 16:50–17:05.
A grey sky is a good backdrop for silhouettes. Shoot the five finals while there is still daylight. Then have dinner earlier.
Rain. Skip or shorten Jodipan. It is open air. Move the day to Kayutangan: the heritage area and the cafés have cover. The reveal happens at dinner either way.
14 · Practical things
Practical things
- Money.
Jodipan: entry about Rp 5,000 per person. Open 07:00–17:00. Parking: about Rp 2,000 (bike) or Rp 5,000 (car). Kajoetangan village: Rp 5,000, open until 20:00. The main street is free. Tugu is free. Motorcycle parking at Kayutangan and Tugu: about Rp 2,000–3,000 per stop.
- The sun.
Sunset at 17:30. Golden hour about 16:30–17:30. The schedule is tuned to both. Golden hour, what it is and how to use it.
- Getting around.
We ride between spots — every hop is five to ten minutes on the Varios. Inside the spots we walk. The Kayutangan corridor is pedestrian-first: park at the ends, walk the street. Helmets go in the under-seat trunks or with the parking attendant.
- Kit.
Charged battery, spare battery, empty memory cards, water, power bank. August is the dry season. Rain forecast? Pack ponchos, not umbrellas — we ride.
- Dinner.
Any café on Kayutangan street. Pick the one that fits. Ask for the biggest table. It is also the reveal table.
